SGI Phils. Youth Division Members– “Kosen-Rufu Day Commemorative Meeting”

Following is an excerpt from SGI President Daisaku
Ikeda’s essay, “The Magnificent Ceremony on March 16″ (World
Tribune 3/27/98).

I have fulfilled my vow to my mentor.

I have fulfilled my vow to my fellow members.

I have fulfilled all the objectives I pledged to achieve.

President Toda & IkedaOn
that day, when we gathered at the foot of Mount Fuji, we entered a new
stage in the progress of kosen-rufu.

It was a cold day. The grand peak of Fuji looked down on us from
above, serenely witnessing the event.

The ceremony on March 16 was exhilarating. Mr. Toda announced that
he was passing the baton of kosen-rufu to the youth division.

On that day in 1958, some 6,000 young disciples
gathered with their mentor, Josei Toda, whose life was quietly ebbing
away. Everyone celebrated that landmark day with joy and
excitement. Brave young men and women dedicated to kosen-rufu had
assembled from all over Japan. They shook hands, patted each other
on the shoulder, and talked and laughed together. It was a joyful
vision of future triumph.

Four decades of indestructible achievement have passed since that day.

On March 1, Mr. Toda said to me: “The rest will
be up to you, Daisaku. I’m counting on you.” A few days
later, he made a suggestion: “Let’s conduct a ceremony that will
serve as a trial run — a dress rehearsal — for kosen-rufu, in
preparation for the future.” Mr. Toda knew that he would
never rise again, never again stand at the head of the march for
kosen-rufu, directing its advance.

Nichiren Daishonin writes: “Life is limited, and we must not
begrudge it. What we should aspire to, after all, is the
Buddha land” (The Major Writings of
Nichiren Daishonin, vol. 5, p. 132)
.

March 16 was a ceremony to eternally honor and pay tribute to the
selfless spirit of Mr. Toda, who had lived in complete accord with these
words of the Daishonin, and to pass that legacy on to the next
generation.

At the proud ceremony, Mr. Toda declared: “The
Soka Gakkai is the king of the religious world.” This
impassioned cry, this lion’s roar, is engraved forever in my being.
At that moment, I vowed in my heart to see to it that the Soka Gakkai
would indeed be king. “King of the religious world”
means king of the realms of thought and philosophy. The Chinese
character for king is written with three horizontal strokes, one above
the other, intersected by one vertical stroke. Here are the
“three” of the third month, March, and the “one” of
16. Where is the six? It is represented by the 6,000 Ganges rivers
who would follow in their wake. For us, the great ceremony on
March 16 showed clear proof that “the assembly at Eagle Peak has
not yet dispersed” (Gosho Zenshu, p.
757)
.

President Toda in the LitterOn
April 2, 1958, 17 days after the ceremony on March 16, Mr. Toda’s noble
life came to an end. March 16 had been a farewell ceremony, the passing
of the baton.

Forty years have passed since then. In that time, the Soka Gakkai
has soared to become the king of thought, the king of human rights, the
king of peace.

The comrades who have struggled by my side over the
years are all living wonderful lives of triumph and good fortune.
I will always honor these noble friends, through all time.

Disciples are those who carry out the mentor’s
teachings. Disciples are those who fulfill their vows.
I have done these things, and that is my greatest pride.

Nichiren Daishonin writes, “If you want to understand what results
will be manifested in the future, look at the causes that exist in the
present” (MW-2 [2nd ed.],
172)
. A powerful determination and our actions
in the present moment determine the future. March 16 is the
eternal starting point of true cause, when all disciples stand up to be
counted. For me, each day is a day of fresh commitment, each
day is March 16.

Today, the rising sun tints the great mountain range
of the 21st century. Following the model of March 16, I
have passed the baton of the Soka Gakkai spirit completely to the youth.
Soon, yes, soon, their time for glory will be here.

March is the time when trees and shrubs begin to parade their fresh
greenery and their lovely new blossoms. Youth, whom I will always
love and trust, the 21st century is yours. Your time
has come. It has, inexorably, begun.

Final Season of LOST !!!!

Can’t really wait to get lost in the final season of LOST….

The sixth and final season of the American serial drama television series Lost commenced airing in the United States and Canada on February 2, 2010.[3] The sixth-season premiere was the first to climb in the ratings year-over-year since the second season, drawing 12.1 million viewers.[4] The series finale will air on May 23, 2010.[1] The season continues the stories of the survivors of the fictional September 22, 2004 crash of Oceanic Airlines Flight 815 on a mysterious island in the South Pacific. The survivors must deal with two outcomes of the detonation of a hydrogen bomb on the island in the 1970s. While the on-island story continues, “flash sideways”[5] show what would happen if Flight 815 never crashed. The season is reportedly scheduled to be released on DVD and Blu-ray on August 24, 2010, alongside a complete series boxset.[6]

Production

On May 7, 2007, ABC Entertainment President Stephen McPherson announced that Lost will end during the 2009–2010 season with a “highly anticipated and shocking finale.”[7] “We felt that this was the only way to give Lost a proper creative conclusion,” McPherson said.[7] Beginning with the 2007–2008 television season, the final 48 episodes would have been aired as three seasons with 16 episodes each, with Lost concluding in its sixth season. Due to the writers’ strike, the fourth season featured 14 episodes, and Season 5 had 17 episodes. Season 6 was planned to have 17 episodes, too.[8] However, on June 29 it was announced that the final season will feature an additional hour, making the number of episodes 18.[2]

Executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse stated that they “always envisioned Lost as a show with a beginning, middle, and end,” and that by announcing when the show would end that viewers would “have the security of knowing that the story will play out as we’ve intended.”[7] Lindelof and Cuse stated that securing the 2010 series-end date “was immensely liberating” and helped the series rediscover its focus.[9] Lindelof noted, “We’re no longer stalling.”[9] The producers also plan to wrap up long-standing mysteries, such as the nature of the smoke monster, the four-toed statue of Taweret, the identity of the Adam & Eve skeletons from the season one episode “House of the Rising Sun”,[10] and the reason the Dharma periodic resupply drops continue after the purge.[11] However, Lindelof has later hinted that whoever built the statue will not be addressed.[12] The producer has also indicated that Walt’s unusual abilities may be explained, although this may not necessarily require the character’s direct involvement.[13] Matthew Fox stated in an interview that in the final season, the characters of Jack Shephard and John Locke “will come head to head.” A third of the way through the final season, the two time lines will be “solidified into one” and “will be very linear – no more flashbacks, nothing.” [14] He has also claimed to be the only cast member who knows the ending of the series,[15] though Lindelof has clarified that Fox only knows things that are relevant to his character.[16]

During Comic-Con 2009, numerous sixth season reports were made. Carlton Cuse stated both the time travel and flash-forward seasons were over, and they’re moving into something different for the sixth season.[17] Josh Holloway stated his character Sawyer would revert to his old self after the loss of Juliet.[17] Though Cuse and Lindelof stated that the Dharma Initiative will no longer play a large role in the show,[18] they have said that the “Dharma-Michigan connection” will play a significant role in season six.[19] Lindelof has stated that the producers had a direct hand in the production of the season six promotional poster that was first displayed at Comic-Con, and that everything in it is intentional; he also made a reference to the Abbey Road cover in connection to the poster.[13] Season six is the first and only season of Lost ever to not feature any kind of preview or official promotional material such as sneak peeks and promo pictures for future episodes since the Lost producers consider any single frame from the first episodes to be too revealing. According to Lindelof, “even a single scene from the show would basically tip what it is we’re doing this year, and what it is we’re doing this year is different than what we’ve done in other years”.[20][21][22]
[edit] Cast
From left to right: Ilana, Richard, Claire, Sayid, Kate, Sawyer, Locke, Jack, Jin, Ben, Hurley, Sun, Miles and Frank, arranged in a pastiche of Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper.

The cast features fourteen major roles with star billing, ten of whom return from the fifth season,[3] in addition to three new regular cast members and one who returns from the fourth season. The latter half of the previous season follows two storylines, as such the cast is roughly divided into two groups. The first storyline follows the group of people who have been stuck in 1977 and detonated a hydrogen bomb on the island in an attempt to change the timeline: the survivors’ leader Dr. Jack Shephard (Matthew Fox), former fugitive Kate Austen (Evangeline Lilly), millionaire Hugo “Hurley” Reyes (Jorge Garcia), former torturer Sayid Jarrah (Naveen Andrews), con artist James “Sawyer” Ford (Josh Holloway), medium Miles Straume (Ken Leung), and former mob-enforcer Jin-Soo Kwon (Daniel Dae Kim). The second storyline follows the group of people who are on the island in the present day of late 2007: Sun Kwon (Yunjin Kim), who has returned to the island in search of her husband, Jin; Ben Linus (Michael Emerson), former leader of the island’s native population, known as the Others; deceased crash survivor John Locke (Terry O’Quinn);[23] pilot Frank Lapidus (Jeff Fahey), Richard Alpert (Nestor Carbonell), an ageless advisor to the Others, and mysterious Flight 316 leader Ilana (Zuleikha Robinson). Carbonell was named a main cast member by the executive producers at Comic-Con 2009, after guest starring in the previous three seasons,[24] and Fahey has been confirmed by Lindelof as part of the season six main cast.[13] Robinson was confirmed to be part of the main cast in a press release, after guest starring in the fifth season.[3] Also returning is Emilie de Ravin, who was absent during the fifth season and placed on a holding contract in order to reprise her role in the final season as Claire Littleton, a new mother who is last seen in a moving cabin with her deceased father.[25][26]

Several former cast members are scheduled to return to the show, or have been asked back.[27] Henry Ian Cusick reprises his role as Desmond Hume, who has left the island and lives with his wife Penny (Sonya Walger), who is also returning.[28] Elizabeth Mitchell returns as fertility specialist Dr. Juliet Burke. Mitchell has stated that her return is “instrumental to the story”.[29] Dominic Monaghan is slated to return as deceased rock star Charlie Pace in four episodes.[30][31] The producers have also confirmed that Jeremy Davies will return as deceased physicist Daniel Faraday in multiple episodes.[17] Ian Somerhalder also returns as deceased Flight 815 crash survivor Boone Carlyle in several episodes.[32] Rebecca Mader, who portrays anthropologist Charlotte Lewis, has also confirmed that she is returning.[33] The producers have also confirmed that Harold Perrineau and Cynthia Watros, who portray Michael Dawson and Libby Smith, respectively, will return in the second half of the season.[34] About the return of Libby, Cuse stated, “Finally, all of your questions [about Libby] will be answered”, however, Lindelof jokingly responded, “No, they will not”.[35] Maggie Grace, who portrays Shannon Rutherford, Boone’s stepsister, has been asked to return, but Grace has not yet accepted due to her busy schedule.[36] Furthermore, the producers wish to bring back the character of Walt Lloyd, however Malcolm David Kelley, who portrays Walt, has aged significantly and the producers are working to overcome this obstacle.[31]

Recurring characters who are expected to return include: Jack and Claire’s father, Dr. Christian Shephard (John Terry), wealthy industrialist and former Other Charles Widmore (Alan Dale), former Other Eloise Hawking (Fionnula Flanagan), Locke’s ex-girlfriend, Helen Norwood (Katey Sagal), Hurley’s former boss, Randy Nations (Billy Ray Gallion), mysterious Flight 316 passenger Bram (Brad William Henke), deceased one-eyed Other Mikhail Bakunin (Andrew Divoff), mercenaries Martin Keamy (Kevin Durand) and Omar (Anthony Azizi), and Vincent, a dog who survived the crash of Flight 815 and lives on the island.[37][38][39][40][41][42] Furthermore, Greg Grunberg briefly reprises his role as Flight 815 pilot Seth Norris in a voice over in the season premiere.[43] Mark Pellegrino reprises his role as Jacob, the mysterious figure in charge of the island,[44] while Titus Welliver will also reprise his role as the mysterious unnamed character who appeared to be antagonistic to him in the season 5 finale.[45]

Several new recurring characters will be introduced in the sixth season. Deadwood actor John Hawkes was cast to portray a character named Lennon[46] and Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada obtained the role of Dogen; both men are Others stationed at the temple.[47][48] Also, William Atherton has been reported to have been cast in a guest role,[49] while Sheila Kelley has been cast as an unknown role that was originally believed to be “Kendall”,[50] but Kelley has since stated that the role she was cast as was not Kendall.[51]

Anger is not good

By: Katherine R. Oyson

Heres a thought from Max Lucado, in his book, Grace for the Moment, Volume II, which is worth ponderign: “Anger” It’s a peculiar yet predictable emotion.  It begins as a drop of water. An irritant. A frustration. Nothing big, just an aggravation. Someone gets your parking place. Someione pulls in front of you on the freeway.  A waitress is slow and you are in a hurry. The toast burns. Drops of water. Drip. Drip. Drip. Drip. Yet, get enough of these seemingly inocent drops of anger and before long you’ve got a bucket full of rage. Walking revenge. Blind bitterness… Now, is that the way to live! What anger ever created? What problems have ever been resolved by revenge?

You and I have been angry in some moments in our lives… We do get angry or irritated because of our expectations on some people, or even our loved ones. Like what happened to my friend the other day. Upon waking up he found out that their maid was not able to cook rice for lunch. He was so angry that he threw he pressure cooker on the sink and shouted at the maid at the top of his voice. Because of his frustration, especially that he was so hungry, he drove to the restaurant. While driving, he felt that his heart was beating fast and he felt very bad inside of him. He said that good he didn’t have a heart  attack.

I told my friend to take it easy. Ishared with him what the doctor had told me while he was pumping the heart of my late husband who had a heart attack three years. He said that anger makes the blood curdled so that it hinders its flow, thereby depriving the brain of oxygen. And the result of this is fatal.

However, anger at times can be good. Social scientists agree that anger can be beneficial when it is expressed sonstructively. One way to make ones point clear without resorting to personal attackt or below the belt.

In the same light, the www. Beyondintractability.org states that one of the approaches in expressing anger is expression. This involves conveying your feelings in an assertive, but not aggressive manner. This is the best way to handle anger. However, you must make sure that you are respectful to others and are not being overly demanding or pushy, as this will likely only produce aggression in return.

A question might be raised, What can one do in times of anger? The www.beyondintractability.org cites some ways.

Relaxation. As simple as it sounds, basic relaxation exercises can be powerful tools in overcoming one’s anger. Among these simple techniques are deep breathing:; slowly repeating a phrase, such as “relax” or “take it easy”, using peaceful imagery to imagine a relaxing situation; and also relaxing exercise, like yoga or tai-chi.

Problem solving. Not all anger is inappropriate. When there is a very real root to anger, approaching the situation form the perspective of a problem solver can help to diffuse your strong feelings. Make a plan how you can fix the situation and approach it with good intention.

Better communication.  Angry people tend to jump to conclusions and overreact. By slowing down and thinking about what you say, this problem can be avoided. Also, make sure you understand what other people are saying before respoinding to them. Listen to the reasons for other’s anger an try not to be overly cirtical. Listening is as important to communication as speaking is.

Using humor. By refusing to take yourself too seriously, you can diffuse your anger. Try using humorous imagery to lighten your mood or to make fun of yourself.

Practice Loving Kindness

By: Katherine R. Oyson

There was a story about two friends who were walking through the dessert. During some point of hteir journey, they had argument, and one friend slapped the other one in the face. The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand: “Todaymy best friend slapped me in the face.”

They kept on walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The one who had been slapped got stuck in the mire and the started drowning; but the friend saved him. After he recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone: “Today my best friend save my life.”

The friend who had slapped and saved his best firend asked him, “After I hurt you, wou worte in the sand and now, you write on a stone, why?”

The other firend replied , “When someone hurts us, we should write it down in the sand where winds of forgiveness can erase it away. But when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it in stone where no wind can ever erase it.”

What message does the story convey? An unkown writer has this advise, “Learn to forgive those who have hurt you and remember the kindness that received from others.”

Nearly every one of us has been hurt by the actions or words of others, that it is impossible for us just to let it go or fall on deaf ears. Anger and hatred and even bitterness pester in our being, to the point that we can’t sleep soundly because of the hurt that has been done to us. There are even some of us who would go to the extent of getting even.

Writer Katherine Piderman, Ph.D., said that if we harbor anger, hatred and bitterness in our hearts, we may be the one to pay the price most dearly. Letting compassion, kindness andpece. Forgivenss can psychological well-being, less stress and hostility, lower blood pressure, fewer symptoms of depression, anxiety, and chronic pain, and lower risk of alcohol and substance abuse. Hence, there’s nothing like practicing loving kindness by forgiveness and always to remember the good deeds that we received from others.

To practice loving kindness gives a wave of peace, serenity, and joy, especially not forgetting those who have extended help to us in one way or another. The www.visionarylead.org points out that there are some ways wherein we can practice loving kindness.  These are the following:

Reflect on the kindness of others. This will help you see the positive side of any situation regardless how difficult it may be. Contemlate what other people have done for you in large and small ways. Focus on a specific friend or family member, and remember all the good they have done.

Remember an experience of love that someone gave you. Reflect on how it really moved you.

Repay the kindness of others.  Take the perpective that many people have helped you. Everyone you meet may have helped you in some way, directly or indirectly. Every encounter becomes an opportunity to repay someone’s kindness. This attitute can change your life.

Contemplate the positive qualities of others.  Generate loving kindness towards each person and the wish for him or her to be happy. This can help transform negative emotions such as anger or jealousy.

Consider others the same as yourself.  This will give you greater insight into how to truly help someone.
